Face-to-face interaction is a common practice that is essential in any given healthcare setting. This is part of the communication strategy that leaders in the healthcare facility will utilize in the daily running of the facility. In this interaction strategy, individuals are required to desist from the use of any technological medium. As a result, the members involved in face to face interaction will illustrate various social behaviors that demonstrate the relationship that between the two or more individuals. The following paper will identify various social behaviors that are experienced in the daily work setting. Through the examination of these social behaviors, the following paper will identify the impact the interaction patterns have on the medical practice and the relationship between subordinates and their leaders.


In a clinical setting, face-to-face interaction occurs almost every other minute. Therefore, one of the social behaviors that are experienced is eye contact (Ackerson & Viswanath, 2009). In this case, eye contact is important as the staff members give each other instructions or descriptions of the patients that may have arrived at the hospital. A nurse for instance, will communicate face-to-face with a physician as he or she explains the various problems that the patient is experiencing. Eye contact will enable better communication between the two medical practitioners. This also enables the physician to note that the descriptions are directed to him and not any other person.

Another social behavior that is experienced in the clinical setting is the use of gestures. Hereby, medical practitioners will utilize gestures as a basic means of explaining their thoughts or perceptions on various aspects of medical care. The physician or nurse will call on to various subordinates using hand gestures to point out exactly who is being called. This is also an important aspect of face-to-face communication especially when giving instructions. In a case where interns are learning about various illnesses and how best to diagnose and treat patients with similar diseases, the use of gestures is important (Rushton, Reina & Reina, 2007).

The nature of face-to-face interaction in a clinical setting usually involves the use of respect between individuals. In this case, the members of the healthcare facility will usually practice speaking in respectful tones (Atkins, 2014). Hereby, it is less likely to find medical practitioners shouting at each other in the hallways of a medical institution. This enables the health professionals to come up with appropriate decisions that enable the administration of proper health treatment practices. The use of respectful language in the healthcare setting enables each leadership practices. A cohesive bond is created between the medical professionals when each of them feels that their role in the facility is appreciated.

In many of the medical facilities, majority of the professionals will always have a face-to-face conversation while standing up. Therefore, the social behavior that is practiced in this case is posture. Hereby, these professionals will always be alert and attentive to the individuals they are communicating with. In this case, when one is being given instructions by their leader, taking notes is an important aspect of the interaction process (Lindeke & Sieckert, 2005). Taking notes among the subordinate staff allows for easier comprehension of the instructions that were given. In this case, effective communication is practiced between the leader and the subordinates.


Eye contact is a basic part of communication between the medical professionals in a clinic setting. Nevertheless, being able to analyze social behavior patterns from this will be effective in modeling leadership into one’s occupation. Sometimes, subordinate staff may not always maintain eye contact with their leaders (Ackerson & Viswanath, 2009). This may demonstrate that there is an element of fear between the two professionals hence effective communication may not always be achieved. The junior staff member may feel that he or she cannot voice their opinion creating a barrier between him and the senior staff member. Being capable of analyzing such behavioral will enable leaders to develop trust while minimizing fear of authority.

In the aspect of medical practitioners using gestures during communication, a leader will be able to demonstrate the gestures that are evidences of positive reinforcement of desirable behavior. In a case where the junior staff members have performed their duties well it is important to recognize their effort (Rushton, Reina & Reina, 2007). The recognition of simple tasks such as administering medication to a patient will help in building a relationship between leader and the junior staff. The experienced relationship will demonstrate high levels of trust and cohesion.

In the clinical setting posture and respect are two aspects of social behavior that may easily be neglected. However, their importance in the provision of healthcare treatment should be stressed. In this case, when medical professionals practice good face-to-face communication posture with each other, they will be able to practice the same with the patients that they treat. This will create a healthy relationship between the patient and the medical practitioner (Fleischer et al., 2009). Furthermore, the respect that the professionals share while conducting their duties will demonstrate the respect they have for their patients. Hereby, the leader will able to analyze behavior that demonstrates a lack of ethics (Lindeke & Sieckert, 2005). This may be in the form of foul language, confidentiality issues and lacking empathy for the patient’s health situation.
